Building a Reliable Feed Routine for Your Barn
Horses are creatures of habit. Their digestive systems are designed for small, frequent meals — and disruptions to a feeding schedule can cause stress, behavioral issues, and in worst cases, colic. Building a reliable, consistent feed routine is one of the most important things you can do for your barn.
Set Fixed Feeding Times
Aim to feed at the same times every day, within 30 minutes of your target window. Most barn managers feed twice daily — morning and evening. If your horses are stalled for extended periods, a midday hay top-off is beneficial.
Know What You're Feeding and Why
Every horse in your barn has different needs. A retired trail horse has very different caloric requirements than a horse in active training. Take time to evaluate each animal individually and build their ration accordingly. When in doubt, consult with an equine nutritionist — this is a service we connect our subscribers with through the RanchServ Partner Network.
Never Run Out
Running out of hay mid-week is one of the most stressful situations a barn manager faces. A subscription delivery model solves this entirely — your hay and feed arrive before you run low, on a schedule you control. No emergency runs to the store, no substituting lower-quality forage because that's all that's available.
Track Your Inventory
Keep a simple log of how much hay you're going through each week. This helps you right-size your subscription and catch early signs of a horse going off feed — which can be an early health indicator.
